Radio program "The People and its Defender"
In late 1999, when Eduardo Mondino took office as National Ombudsman, one of the major aims fixed by the Press Area was to "Federalize the National Ombudsman figure" to make its activity reach all the inhabitants of our country, safeguarding the principle of equality enshrined in our Constitution.
One of the main hindrances has been (and still is) the budgetary restriction to put into action tactics or strategies which could result in better and more practical solutions. Having the members of the team made an exhaustive analysis, we believed our project should be low-cost, effective and lasting in time, ensuring the presence of the Institution in every corner of our country.
Thus, the project and proposal called "The People and its Defender", weekly radio program produced and aired by the Press Area team, was born. This was quite surprising considering that its realisation, production and emission entails no cost whatsoever to the parties (Ombudsman/radios).
After presenting this idea to the National Ombudsman, the answer was clear: "Let’s start to work".
At the beginning, we thought that one or two stations per province broadcasting the comments, thoughts and opinions of the National Ombudsman and his collaborators, apart from the reactions of the inhabitants of our country would be more than enough. But... this was not so.
The demand from the most incredible places or those we had never even considered to receive the program on a weekly basis, the increasing interest of citizens in participating feeling that there is someone who defends them and the opening of the program to NGOs increased our commitment and offer.
Phrases like "I heard you help people" or "I was told in the radio that you can get my pension for free" make the team of "The People and its Defensor" not only keep their arms up but they also drive us to a stronger effort and a healthy pride which is constantly feeding the Ombudsman’s main purpose: "To make ALL Human Rights credible".-
